10 Tips to enhance your pronunciation

By Miss Paty Flores

“Everybody knows that speaking is the only way to improve your pronunciation. But there are also other ways for training your vocal apparatus”

  • Listen to yourself: Record your conversation in a tape and compare it with the conversation of a native speaker.

  • Slow down: Practice some basic words everyday. Begin saying isolated sounds, then words and finally link words in sentences.

  • Picture it: Close your eyes and think of the way in which we produce the sounds before speaking.

  • Get physical: Teach your face and mouth how to used muscles in a different way. Concentrate yourself in the difficult sounds.

  • Watch yourself: Stand in front of a mirror and watch the position of your tongue and lips and the shape your mouth takes when you produce certain sounds. Compare this movements with the ones of native speakers

  • Copy the experts: Listen to the radio and watch T.V. and movies in English (don’t read the subtitles) and become the “copy cat” of those people, even if you are not sure about what you’re saying.

  • Practice alone: Some pronunciation problems remain because we’re afraid of making mistakes. Set up your own stage and act out a dialogue. Don’t be shy!

  • Find a language buddy: Get close to a mate interested in improving pronunciation too. Exchange recorded messages and tips. Whenever possible talk to native speakers as well.
